When it isn’t worth the drive
San Antonio has a large medical and dental community and no shortage of capable periodontists and oral surgeons. We would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. For routine periodontal treatment, a straightforward single implant, or ongoing maintenance, driving eighty miles for care you can get ten minutes from home makes very little sense — and if that is your situation, we will tell you so on the phone before you book anything.
Where the trip earns itself is at the difficult end: a full arch to reconstruct, bone loss severe enough that several people have declined the case, an implant that has failed and nobody has explained why, or a plan you have been given that you are not confident about. Those are the cases where a specialist opinion changes the outcome rather than merely duplicating it.
The most common reason San Antonio patients contact us is the second opinion — usually before committing to a large, expensive, irreversible plan. That is a reasonable thing to want, and it takes one visit.
How we plan around eighty miles

- Can you look at my scans before I drive up?
- Often, yes. If you have a recent CBCT or panoramic radiograph, send it and we can usually tell you whether a visit is likely to be useful. It isn’t a substitute for an examination, but it’s enough to avoid a wasted eighty miles.
- What if I need emergency care after surgery and I’m back in San Antonio?
- You’ll leave with direct contact details and written guidance on what’s normal and what isn’t. Most post-operative worries are settled by phone. Where you need to be seen urgently and can’t travel, we’ll coordinate with a local practice or your own dentist.
- Will my San Antonio dentist still be involved?

- Do you offer sedation, and can I drive home afterward?
- Sedation is available, and no — you’ll need someone to drive. For patients traveling from Bexar County that’s worth planning in advance, and some prefer to stay locally the night of a longer surgery.
- How do costs compare with San Antonio?
